Florida Advocacy

In 2002, Florida citizens voted for a constitutional amendment requiring that the state provide high quality pre-Kindergarten for all four-year olds. Since Florida's Universal Pre-Kindergarten program (UPK) has been implemented it has both been praised for its universal scope and criticized for its low quality. Older adults across Florida who care passionately about the quality of the education their children and grandchildren recieve have joined Generations United's Seniors4Kids to call on state legislators and Florida's governor to take the first step in providing not just pre-K, but high-quality pre-K, by requiring pre-K teachers to have bachelor's degrees. Current state law does not require BA's for pre-K teachers. Yet, decades of research shows the most effective preschool instructors are those with at least a four-year degree and specialized training in early childhood.
