I am writing to ask for your support of crucial investments in early education during the reauthorization of our nation's primary education law, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).The research is clear: high-quality pre-kindergarten is an education reform strategy that works.

Quality pre-k prepares children to succeed in school and life, saving public dollars over time -- yielding a return of $7 for every dollar invested. It provides the positive results that families, communities and policymakers seek -- improved children's cognitive, social and emotional skills, increased high school graduation rates and a closing of the achievement gap.

Currently, 70 percent of three and four year olds in our country have no access to publicly funded pre-kindergarten programs. The current K-12 model ignores the research on the critical importance of early learning. It’s time that we view high-quality, voluntary pre-k as an indispensable part of our education system and our most prominent federal education law, ESEA.
